Just because you think you couldn't ever beat your coach in a fencing bout doesn't mean you shouldn't try your hardest.
For one, they know your skills and abilities and will be able to tell if you’re doing your best or not. If the feel you could be doing better, push ups will most likely be in order.
And secondly, it’s fencing. You never know what can happen in a bout.
